Asteya: Do Not Steal
This goes beyond the obvious “don’t take things that aren’t yours” idea. Are you the energy vampire in the yoga room? Are you jealous of someone else's practice or abilities? A huge addition to not stealing is non-covetousness (alo luptvam). These happen as you become comfortable with where you are in life and have control over where you are going. While these are all great in general, how to we incorporate this in the yoga room so that we can strengthen ourselves one step more?
While practicing, actively use your energy and direct it towards your intention (remember: energy follows intention).
Step 1: Set an intention, or goal.
Step 2: Imagine that each pose is a mini step closer to that goal.
Step 3: Use all of your energy and send it to that goal, one pose at a time.
Step 4: Positively reinforce yourself as you make progress.
Step 5: Realize that you already have everything you need, because you can accomplish each goal, one step at a time.
Step 6: Take this to the real world; start using real world goals in the yoga room.
In the end, you will become an energy sun, rather than an energy vampire.
Jeffrey Goldberg’s Practice Tip: Cultivating Stillness in Action
Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi (concentration, meditation, and oneness) together constitute Samyama. This is the name given to the combined practice of these three forms of yoga at one and the same time. These three constitute yoga proper. By Samyama on external objects it is said that the Yogi gets various Siddhis (powers) and hidden knowledge of the universe.
Certainly with mastery of Samyama, the knowledge of Samadhi becomes more and more lucid. This is the fruit of the practice of Samyama. The power of the inner silence erupts into outer expression. There is no purpose in doing internal work if it does not result in improving our outer lives.
The goal of yoga practice is to delve deep into that inner silence at the core of our being, cultivating the breathless state of Tranquility and then using the power and knowledge of that state in order to improve and to heal the world. This is stillness in action.
