This month we will be discussing all the ins and outs of props. I personally love props! They are wonderful for alignment support, stabilization, and an 'extra' hand or step, anything you need!
We are going to discuss two main ways to use blocks this month: modifications and amplifications.
Many times a block can be placed under the limbs in a pose where we can't quite reach the ground. This could be the hands in a forward fold, under a hip in a seated pose, or even between limbs that can't yet touch.
A common objection is: if I use a block to hold, won't it make me reach a plateau or cause me to not get a good stretch?
The secret is that if you use a block in a modification way, you put it in a place where you are already getting your fullest stretch. This means that it allows you to safely relax in your fullest expression of the pose. Once you get to a point where you no longer feel a stretch with the support of a block, you can remove the block and continue into your new fullest expression of the pose.
I find people run out of ways in which to use the block once they feel they have reached the 'final expression' of a pose. But wait, there is more! Just as you initially used the block to 'lengthen' the arms to reach the ground in a forward fold, you can now place the block under your feet to 'lengthen' the legs to further extend your forward fold. Another wonderful place to use a block to help amplify your pose is in sleeping butterfly pose. If you can get your legs all the way to the ground, place the block under the hips to lift the body allowing the legs to open more than 180 degrees.
